Merriwether Elementary honored veterans in a special production put on by Mrs. Patricia Bowen, music teacher, and the entire fourth grade class. MES had over 50 veterans in attendance from all five branches of the military. Veterans were welcomed by a committee of students with a breakfast prior to the program. All branches stood and were honored as their hymns were sung. Students spoke of the history of the United States and of the military while other patriotic songs were also performed. Mrs. Bowen stated, “Teaching students the importance of our military and showing them how to honor the men and women who have served or are serving our country is highly valuable. Some of these students may grow up to serve our nation in this way.” Merriwether Elementary seeks to include the members of the community through many events hosted by the school. Honoring veterans and learning about their service shows students respect, courage, and integrity. These three life skills are just a small way that MES is helping to create world-class citizens.
