YumThird grade students at Merriwether Elementary had a delicious lesson in geography while learning about the South Carolina regions. Students have studied the regions throughout the last couple of weeks. They have learned specific traits and characteristics of each region. In this activity each child was given a cookie in the shape of South Carolina. They were given different ingredients to choose from to represent each region. Savanna Jones, third grader at MES, exclaimed, “My favorite region is the Coastal region. I used the Swedish Fish candy to represent this region on my cookie. I loved showing what I knew and being able to eat my social studies lesson too!” Teaching South Carolina regions is not only part of the standards, but a great way to build a foundation as the students learn the history of South Carolina throughout their third grade year. Innovative lessons that focus on student choice are just another practice that MES teachers are using to help prepare their students to become Edgefield County graduates.
