Fire Safety Week

Fire Safety WeekMerriwether Elementary School held its Fire Prevention and Safety Day as elementary students got a first-hand look and hands-on experience courtesy of the Merriwether Fire Department. Volunteer firefighters brought their trucks, gear and knowledge to the school. MES Students in all grades received lessons in fire safety as they learned about 911, smoke detectors and Stop, Drop and Roll. These important lessons were taught during national Fire Prevention Week. Students got to see firefighters in full gear, tour fire trucks, and watch live demonstrations. Volunteer firefighter, Rudy Brooks, stated, “It is great that we get the opportunity to educate these students about fire safety. It also helps that we return yearly to reinforce fire safety as they grow older.” In upper grades, students were also taught about the benefits of being a volunteer firefighter and how important that is to the Merriwether community. Partnership and collaboration in the Merriwether community is a powerful relationship. Teaching students to be proud of their community and be thankful for those who serve in it is just another way that MES is helping to grow world class citizens.
