Merriwether Elementary second and third grade students are learning a new language... Spanish!

Spanish Club is an extra-curricular activity offered to second and third grade students and is taught by MES Media Specialist, Emily Hopkins. The students begin by learning basic conversational Spanish. "I try to keep things fun for the students, so they don't think of this as another class," explained Miss Hopkins. "We listen to music, do fun activities, and play games, all of which expose them to Spanish and help them practice their new language skills," Hopkins continued.

Learning another language is not only a useful skill, it can also help improve English literacy and vocabulary by making connections between the languages. "The response to Spanish Club has been overwhelming!" exclaimed Miss Hopkins. "The students are so excited about learning another language - it's wonderful!" MES has three Spanish Club groups this year (an increase from two groups last year), with a total of 63 students participating.

Spanish Club falls right in line with our community and district vision of creating world-class citizens. Students are being exposed to multiple languages, which enhance listening and verbal communication skills.
