Celebration KindnessMerriwether Elementary School’s cafeteria was filled with loud cheers, laughs, dancing and music as MES held a pep rally to kick off the start of OLWEUS, an anti-bullying program designed to reduce existing bullying, prevent new development, and achieve better peer relations. OLWEUS focuses on treating each other with respect and teaches students and adults what to do if they witness bullying. The entire staff and student body gathered in the cafeteria as students celebrated how to be kind and stand up in the face of adversity. MES collaborated with MMS as cheerleaders came to the school to help get students excited about OLWEUS. Media specialist, Nikki Mock, recorded a video of the students discussing what kindness means. The students erupted in excitement as they saw their fellow classmates on the screen. The pep rally wrapped up with students singing and dancing together to songs about friendship, celebrating differences, and being stronger together. “This pep rally is important for our students to become more aware of the signs of bullying,” stated, school counselor, Meagan Maness. She went on to say, “They’re learning how to support victims as well as speaking up for themselves.” Teaching integrity, one of the ECSD transfer goals, is a way that MES is helping to prepare their students in becoming Edgefield County graduates and world class citizens.
