Wednesday Word Wizards is a new vocabulary initiative that Merriwether Elementary School is implementing this school year in conjunction with CommuniGraphics, a local business. Each Wednesday, Mr. Bruce Lee, the school principal, selects a vocabulary word of the week. Over the intercom, Mr. Lee announces the new word and gives the students a definition. During the week, Mr. Lee or Mrs. Mandy Lowe, the school's assistant principal, stop random students in the hallway and ask the students to use the word of the week in a sentence. If the student is able to use the word correctly, he/she is awarded a Word Wizard t-shirt provided by CommuniGraphics. We know that vocabulary is a key factor in developing children's comprehension skills.

"Destination" was the first Wednesday Word. The students worked hard to think of a great sentence using the word correctly and then waited anxiously for Mr. Lee or Mrs. Lowe to stop and ask. First grader, Noah Korte, smiled so large when Mrs. Lowe asked him if he had a sentence for the word of the week. "My destination every morning is Merriwether Elementary School," said a giggling Noah.

Our community and school district have identified communication as a key characteristic in developing world class citizens. A robust vocabulary improves all areas of communication – listening, speaking, reading and writing.
